If its a pleco, thats lovely common. They tend to change their color from lighter to darker depending on their surroundings. As long as he still looks nutritious, its probably ok.

It's much think twice if you clean things yourself. Never rely on fish to clean your tank for you because it's not going to work.

An algae scraper will exertion wonders.
